Conventional dentists’ practices of using mercury amalgams, root canals, implants and crowns can all have long-term detrimental effects on the body. Holistic dentistry focuses on the mouth as an integral part of the body system and minimizes harm as far as possible.

Michelle was depressed, anxious and can’t fall asleep. She always believed her depression was due to the betrayal of her loved one because it was not long after that when her symptoms first started. At the same time though, she had 8 mercury amalgam fillings in her teeth. Could mercury toxicity also have accentuated her emotional stress? We believe so. In fact, it has been estimated that 70% of all illnesses are directly or indirectly linked to mouth problems or dental work.
Many dentists are well-intentioned and are only practicing what they have been taught in school, and many people do benefit from dental work which are necessary and save their clients from a lot of pain and suffering. Think gnawing tooth pain! Unfortunately, the way that conventional dentistry is practiced right now also leaves much to be desired.
To understand why conventional dentistry is incomplete, we need to contrast it with something we feel is better – environmental or holistic dentistry. Holistic dentistry does not differ widely from conventional practices except for one crucial difference in principle – the mouth is an integrated member of a person’s body and dental and oral problems should therefore be treated without causing harm and adverse effects on the body over time.
Here are some of the practices conventional dentistry do that are harmful to the body over time and how holistic dentists do it differently:
#1 – Amalgam Fillings (For more information, please refer to the article “What is your dentist not telling you about your dental amalgams?”)
Amalgam fillings are still made up of 50% mercury which makes them highly toxic when ingested. Conventional dentists assert that the mercury in amalgam filling is converted to a non-toxic substance once it reacts with the oral fluids and bacteria. We have found however that this is not true at all, and dental fillings are still one of the most likely contributors to chronic illnesses later on in life.
Furthermore, metal fillings that are 15-20 years old can create cracks in your teeth that eventually grow to become fractures. It is not uncommon to have old fillings stay intact while the tooth structure crumbles around it. In addition to metal fillings weakening tooth structure, they stain the underlying tooth black. It is best to remove old fillings before the tooth breaks, risking root canals or crowns and caps.
Holistic dentists can help to remove these metal fillings safely because it is vital that a strict protocol be followed whenever metal fillings need to be replaced. This includes tooth isolation so that no metal particles find themselves in your mouth or, worse yet, are swallowed. Clean air and oxygen should be provided for you to breathe, along with any special filtration and a custom high speed vacuum unit. They will then replace with fillings that are less toxic to your body.
#2 – Root Canals
Root canals cause the tooth to be “devitalized” – there is no longer any blood supply to that tooth. Why is that important? A constant supply of blood to the tooth allows the immune system to address the presence of bacteria. Research has indicated that it is impossible for any tooth to be thoroughly cleaned and freed of bacteria before the root canal is placed; therefore root canals often propagate the growth of bacteria which can then subsequently migrate to other parts of the body. With a root canal, you have literally built for bacteria a safe haven.

#3 – Implants and Crowns
Environmental dentistry abhors the use of implants without bio-compatibility testing. It can aggravate the immune system and often start allergies and negative reactions. Studies indicate that at some point at least twenty per cent of dental patients develop sensitivity to dental material. Your holistic dentist will have different forms of testing available to ascertain which materials are suitable for you. Use of stainless steel by conventional dentists has been associated with cancer in various researches done.
#4 – Correcting the Bite (For more information, read these articles “Could your IQ be determined by your bite?” and “Your spine is out again? Before you think of chiropractic manipulation, consider this”)
Conventional dentists do not see the bite as important for the structure of the body as a whole, but the holistic dentist do. Bite alignment, along with along with specific concerns like problems with the jaw joint (TMJ) can be addressed using splints designed with state of the art materials, as well as muscular adjustments within the mouth. Sometimes the holistic dentist may coordinate treatment with a chiropractor in order to give you the most positive results.
These are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the differences between conventional and holistic dentists. Holistic dentists also look at diet as contributing to cavities, the use of organic and toxic-free toothpastes to reduce the amount of toxins that the body is exposed to, etc. Dentists, as medical practitioners, should follow the first creed of Hippocrates, “First, do no harm.” That can only come about if they see the mouth as part of an overall body system.
